Types of Cockroaches in the Home

Of the 4000 odd species of cockroach that roam this planet only around 3 actual cause a problem and are known to infest our homes and workplacesEach cockroach has it's own special features and all like slightly different thingsHowever they are all pests and can cause great health risks and damage to us and our families.

There are a few other species that are similar but are found in the home a Little less often.

Identifying these roaches is pretty easy and can aid in extermination techniquesIn this article I will explain a little about each type.

German Cockroach:

Sporting a nice tan / brownish color and two lighter stripes on the back of it's head this little beauty can grow up to around 15mm in length and is probably the fastest breeding of the home pestsIncubation period is about 30 days and around 30-40 nymphs can be bornLiving for around 6 months one roach can become 30,000 in just a year!

Be afraid....Be very afraid!

Oriental Cockroach:

A bit bigger than the other roaches the sluggish Oriental Roach grows to around 25mm in length, which is pretty damn big! They move more slowly than expected and are a dark brown / black color with a shiny bodyLiving in dark damp areas and sometimes known as a 'Waterbug' they are most likely to be found in cellars or damp mulchIncubation can last 2 months with about 15 eggs hatching and they can each live for up to 2 yearsGenerally slower then their German cousins but still a worry.
